Before Eating

Step 1

Truth Statement (Read aloud and rate how true 0 to 10):

  • I am ashamed of my weight

Step 2

Set Up Phrase (Read aloud three times while tapping on side of the hand):

  • Even though I am ashamed of my weight, I love and accept myself.

Step 3

Read the following phrases aloud while tapping on the prescribed spot with your dominant hand:

  • Even though I am so embarrassed that I’m overweight, I completely and deeply love and accept myself.
  • Even though it is shameful to be overweight, I completely and deeply love and accept myself.
  • Even though I feel guilty that I haven’t been able to lose weight because I should be able to do it, I completely love and accept myself.
  • It’s embarrassing.
  • Being  this overweight.
  • I feel like a failure.
  • I know that I must eat too much.
  • And not exercise enough.
  • But here I am, still overweight.
  • Still fat.
  • Still letting myself down.
  • It’s embarrassing.
  • I deserve this shame.
  • Because I’m not strong enough.
  • I’m not good enough to lose this weight.
  • I don’t have enough willpower.
  • I don’t’ have follow through.
  • I’m too weak.
  • That’s what it feels like.
  • It’s the only explanation I can think of.
  • So it must be true.
  • Or maybe there is another perspective here.
  • Maybe there is another way of looking at this.
  • Maybe there is something I need to learn from this.
  • Maybe my being overweight is a symptom, it doesn’t define who I am.
  • It doesn’t make me a bad person.
  • It means that my body is sending me a message.
  • It is trying to make me aware of my beliefs and habits.
  • And that’s a good thing.
  • My body is trying very hard to help me.
  • It is not trying to punish me, and I shouldn’t try to punish myself.
  • By feeling all this guilt and embarrassment.
  • I could be kind to myself.
  • Just like I would to anybody who was doing their best.
  • Because I am doing my best.
  • With the resources I have.
  • And I deserve kindness.
  • And I choose to listen to my body.
  • To the messages it is giving me.
  • What it’s trying to call my attention to.
  • Because this extra weight is a symptom.
  • A symptom of something I’m ignoring.
  • A symptom of a message I haven’t heard yet.
  • I choose to listen to that message.
  • It must be really important if my body is going to this length to let me know it’s there.
  • I wonder what that message could be?
  • I am open to hearing this message.
  • Of what part of my life feels unsafe.
  • Of what part of my life feels uncomfortable.
  • Of how this weight is protecting me.
  • I’m open to finding out what that is.
  • Even if it seems silly, it must be important.
  • I am open to hearing this message.
  • And realizing that this extra weight is here for a reason, and to appreciate it.
  • To appreciate what my body has done for me in keeping me safe.
  • And to be grateful how protective my body is of me.
  • I appreciate it for that.
  • And I’m open to receiving that message now.
  • I’m giving my body permission to let me know what it is.
  • In what ways I can take more care of myself.
  • Value myself.
  • Put myself first.
  • Be responsible for my own happiness.
  • I’m open to hearing that message.
  • And releasing any guilt or shame I have over having this protective layer of fat on me.
  • There is no shame in protecting myself.
  • It’s what we were born to do.
  • I am open to being okay with where I am now.
  • And excited to really tune into my body and what it is trying to tell me.
  • I’m excited to be on this journey.

(take a deep breath)
