Human beings suffer. We’re depressed about the opportunities we missed in the past, and the gap between how we expected our life to be today and how it actually is. We’re anxious about the future. The news presents us with a daily litany of potential disasters, and we worry about how they will affect our lives.

In the midst of all this turmoil, how do we find inner peace? That has been “the great quest” of humankind for millennia. Over 2,000 years ago, in the first of his Four Noble Truths, the Buddha told us that suffering is inevitable.

Jesus said the same thing: “In the world you have tribulation.” From the ancient Greek philosophers like Plato to the modern ones like Nietsche, all the great traditions speak of the inevitability of suffering.

Once that suffering is eliminated, human potential thrives.

Yet today, science is showing us ways in which our suffering can be reduced or even eliminated. A century ago millions of people were dying of infectious diseases like cholera, typhoid, dysentery and influenza. Yet in a few short years, science virtually eradicated those diseases.

Today our civilization is at the same inflection point when it comes to mental health. Research shows that with simple, non-drug, self-help tools, most psychological conditions can be quickly and effectively treated. Depression, anxiety, PTSD and phobias can be eliminated in the majority of people.
